The 80’s is an amazing decade for music, not only for Top40 pop but many other genres that didn’t necessarily get a lot of airplay on the radio. Here are a few of my favorites, 10 forgotten gems of the 80’s.
Tower of Strength
The mission
A long and eerie gem from this English goth rock band. One of the most atmospheric songs of that genre.
The Politics of Dancing
Re-Flex
Amazing song from this short-lived band, they only released an album but it’s a masterpiece of 80’s gems.
Let’s Go All the Way
Sly Fox
Unmistakable hook with those vocal samples, driving beat that rocks this duo only hit.
Love & Pride
King
Infectious song by this little known band with some Latin influences.
Living on the Ceiling
Blancmange
Strange song by this sadly forgotten band. An exotic atmosphere combined with over the top singing.
Doctor! Doctor!
Thompson Twins
Such a great song by the band, listen to the percussion only, it sounds amazing.
Dancing With Tears in my Eyes
Ultravox
Amazing piece by this great New Romantic band. Midge Ure’s voice is perfect, you feel the tears.
No Mercy
The Stranglers
A fun song by these British punk-rockers, great guitar hooks through the song.
Smalltown Boy
Bronski Beat
An incredible and powerful song, with a subject still relevant today. The vocal performance by Jimmy Somerville is unique, it sounds like a plaintive cry.
Fade To Grey
Visage
A classic of the early New Wave movement, hauntingly beautiful with French female spoken works and the great voice of Steve Strange.
